Symbaloo
Symbaloo
Symbaloo is a great tool to use with students to curate digital content or for teachers to guide research or lessons in the classroom. For this particular artifact, I chose to compile resources on an upcoming science unit on the water cycle. Basically, when you find digital or online content that would be appropriate to use, you basically create a tile in Symbaloo and then link the content (either a webpage, video, picture, document, etc.) to that tile. Tiles can then be moved around and organized on the board. You can organize tiles by type or by content or really by however you would like. In addition, you can add a picture or an icon as well as color to the tiles to help identify what they are and to organize content by type or by subject area.
Students can use Symbaloo in multiple ways. To begin, students can create boards of frequently-used sites. This can cut down on the amount of time that students spend searching and typing in URLs. In addition, students can gather resources that they may need if working on a unit or a project. This allows them to easily find those resources day after day which helps to maximize instructional time. As for teachers, Symbaloo allows them to build boards with resources for a particular topic or unit and then share those boards with students. With this, teachers can control what content the students access for any particular topic. Additionally, teachers can use Symbaloo to save online resources for a particular unit or lesson plan. That way, year after year, the teacher doesn’t have to spend time searching for resources to use.
Symbaloo enhances student learning by providing a clear, easy interface to quickly find online resources. For all students, it is a time saver. It also helps students visually see the content all at once. With the interactive board, students are also able to practice how to organize content. For English Language Learners or students with disabilities, Symbaloo is a good way to overcome some of the language barriers that we generally see with traditional search engines.
