QR Codes
A QR Code is a technology that has been around for a few years and is generally seen in different aspects of society. Businesses will often use them to give customers information or to direct them to their website. In education, the possibilities are vast. Creating a QR Code is fairly easy. The QR Codes that were created below were created at www.qrstuff.com. The process is very simple and takes only a few seconds. Just have the site create a QR Code and then link that code to whatever you’d like such as a website, document, picture, video, etc. Then, using a scanning app, scan the code to access the information. This way, that information is accessible via mobile device or tablet with the click of a button.
In this particular case the QR Codes were used during a professional development in which reading specialists and special educators came together to discuss reading acquisition for students with disabilities. During this collaborative effort, the teachers became “experts” in an area of reading. In doing so, they needed to research that area. The QR Codes provide quick, mobile links to those five resources. In this particular professional development this provided another way for teachers to access that information.
To be honest, the possibilities for the use of QR Codes in the classroom are infinite. Students can create codes to link to information or projects that they’ve completed. This way other students, teachers, or parents can access that information. For teachers, they can link things like parent information, homework assignments, projects, or student work for anyone with a mobile device to access. This is a great communication tool for parents or other students. Teachers can also use QR Codes to link to specific content for the students to use. One common use of QR Codes is to have students move between stations, scan the code and then view the information at that station. Since everything is digital, it saves the teacher from having to gather physical resources. The benefits for students is that it brings education mobile. Students can access the information from any device that has the ability to scan.
